Democracy Discussion

Democracy Discussion

I don’t know how to handle this English question and need guidance.

THERE ARE 2 SEPERATE ASSIGNMENTS!

Discussion 1

Initial Post: After reading “Is the United States a republic or a democracy?” and “Our Government: The Constitution” reflect on the ideas presented in the texts. For this discussion, compose 2-3 paragraphs that address the questions and criteria below. Paragraphs should be organized by topic and not simply address the questions in order. Include examples from the readings via direct quotes and/or paraphrased ideas, complete with MLA in-text citations.

  • What is the definition of a “republic”? What is the definition of a “democracy”?
  • Based on these definitions and your own personal experiences living in America, is the United States a republic or a democracy? Both? Neither?
  • Why was the U.S. Constitution written? What is its purpose? Who does it serve?
  • How are “freedom” and “democracy” related?
  • How does the U.S. Constitution endeavor to establish America as a democracy and promote freedom among its citizens?

Criteria:

  • Response to questions should be organized into 2-3 paragraphs by topic
  • Integrate ideas from the assigned readings in your response
  • Focus on source integration (quoting, paraphrasing, and defining)
  • For each example, include an MLA style in-text citation
  • Include an MLA style Works Cited list at the end of the post

Discussion 2

Initial Post: Analysis is the act of breaking something down into its parts in order to gain a better understanding of the whole. A rhetorical analysis, therefore, looks at the way a piece of written work was constructed to achieve the writer’s goals. Specifically, a rhetorical analysis examines a text’s author(s), audience, purpose, context, and message.

After viewing “Preamble & Articles of the U.S. Constitution Infographic,” reading “The Constitution of the United States: A Transcript,” watching “Civil Right and Liberties – U.S. Bill of Rights,” and reading “Bill of Rights of the United States of America (1791),” complete a rhetorical analysis of both founding documents in the chart below. In addition, determine whether or not these founding documents have outlived their utility and explain the reasoning for your response.

When finished, summarize your ideas and include all required components listed below:

  1. Elaborate on the ideas in your chart in one of two ways:
  • Compose 2-3 paragraphs that summarize the contents of the chart

OR

  • Record a 2-3-minute video of yourself discussing the contents of your chart
  1. Post the following to the discussion board:
  • Completed chart with quotations, citations, and elaborations
  • A “Works Cited” list for the sources
  • Paragraphs OR video elaborations on the chart contents (Videos should be a direct link; do not upload a video as an attachment!)

(Hint: This information can be used in your essay!)

Why was it written? (Purpose)

Under what circumstances was it written? (Context)

What does it say? (Message)

Criteria:

  • Response should be organized into 2-3 paragraphs by topic OR video should be organized into a discussion of 2-3 key points
  • Include at least one quotation or paraphrased idea from each of the readings
  • For each quotation/paraphrase, include an MLA style in-text citation with the author’s last name and page number in parentheses (Last name #)
  • Include an MLA style “Works Cited” list with the assigned readings included at the end of the post
