In this paper you will compare, contrast, and discuss two cultures that we have studied in class. I
have provided a series of links and youtubes to get you started, and of course, your textbook will
be an invaluable guide. But don’t stop there! Use these as a stepping off point to see what you
can discover about this culture and what you find interesting.

You may choose which TWO of the cultures that we have discussed in class to explore. Do not
choose a culture you were raised in for this portion or you will not be able to complete the fourth
section of this assignment. You must demonstrate a sound understanding of each culture and its
music. A sound understanding of each culture and music will include the following:

1. Describe both of the cultures including religious beliefs, political systems, history, and
any salient details required to understand the role of music within the culture. Next
describe the music (e.g. what is the aesthetic, instrumentation, main characteristics, etc.).
At least three sources must be cited (in the standard citation form of your preference) for
each culture.
2. Describe what role the music plays within the cultures chosen. How is it used? What are
the cultures attitudes towards the music? Are there different uses for the music? Has this
changed over the years? Include at least one embedded YouTube clip and explain why it
is important for your explanation/discussion. Points will be taken off if this step is not
followed. Be sure to explain prominent musical styles and artists.
3. Compare what is similar and what is different between the cultures you chose to study.
Please be very specific. For example, you could discuss how the internet (or lack of) has
impacted the transmission of music, the different instruments used, how music is used in
the culture, etc. How does the music reflect the culture (i.e. what does it say about the
people who engage in it?)
4. Compare and contrast this to the culture you were raised in (going to a concert vs. music
as a way of life, for example). Has this course changed how you view your own culture
and other cultures? If so, explain.

It is expected this paper will be 4-7 pages long. The maximum word count accepted is 2,000.
Anything longer than this will not be read in its entirety.

You must turn in your signed, completed checklist with the paper. Use it as the cover sheet.
This is for your benefit, to help make sure you have completed each section completely.

Use Times New Roman 12-point font and 1-inch margins. This is not always the default. Be
sure to double check before submitting it. Double space.

Your Final Paper should include a problem statement or description of the social problem you have selected, a discussion of the scope and consequences of the problem, and an assessment of society’s responses to the problem (including public policies and other less formal responses). Papers should also present a clearly reasoned alternative that is supported by scholarly research.
While the following example can be modified to suit your needs, using this outline as a guide will likely result in a high quality final paper:
Describe the social problem.
Explain why this problem qualifies as a social problem.
Indicate the sociological theory or theories that may explain this social problem.
Discuss the individual and social implications of this problem. Your discussion of implications should be supported by accurate research data.
Summarize what social science experts have to say about this social problem. Are their conclusions methodologically sound?
Explain what we, as a society, have done about this problem, considering public policies and other less formal responses.
Explain how well societal efforts to solve the social problem are working.
Describe an alternative.
Discuss why the alternative is, or can be, an effective response to the problem. Remember to consider negative consequences of the alternative response.
Conclude with reflections and thoughts about your chosen social problem.
