Thematic Paper Assignment

Learning Goals

● Write a library research paper, using APA-style citations and references
● Plan, evaluate, and integrate information from diverse sources to meet a specific
communication purpose
● Present information, drawing from a variety of professional formats to match
multiple target audiences
● Understand there are ethical and legal issues associated with professional
communication

The aim of your research paper is to present research addressing the effects of
screen media on children’s development.

The paper will demonstrate the correct use of APA-style citations and
references and draw from at least six sources; at least four must be scholarly journal
articles and two must be web-based sources.

Plan on retrieving your journal articles from a scholarly database via the CSUF
library (e.g., PsycINFO).

Your web-based sources must be of high quality and should not consist of the
following: articles from popular press sources, articles from scholarly journals
available in the library, electronic books, popular press releases, or electronic book
chapters. Remember that the assignment asks you to focus on children or adolescents,
not adults.
You will be conducting a search online to decide on the specific focus of your paper.

The effects of screen media on children’s development are TOO BROAD. Here are
some ideas that you can narrow your topic down to:
o
Violent videogames and their effects on children
o
Violent tv/film media and its effects on children
o
Social media and its effect on adolescents’ body image
o
How media affects children’s sleep behavior
o
How media affects children’s cognitive development
o
Media advertisements and their effects on children
o
Effects of media on children’s language development
o
How media has been used with developmental disabilities
o
How media has affected mental health in adolescents
o
Cyberbullying and its effects on children/adolescents
